Zane Grey Fishing Derby Offers Chance to Win a Canoe and Prizes

RIVER VALLEY – A grand prize of an Old Town canoe with paddles and life vests valued at $800 is within reach of all who enter the Zane Grey Catch-and-Release Fishing Derby through July 6. Participation is free to anglers in Pennsylvania and New York.

The derby celebrates the legacy of world record-holding fisherman, author, and Lackawaxen resident Zane Grey as Pike County, PA marks its 200th anniversary in 2014.

Rainbow, brook and brown troutor smallmouth bass caught on the Delaware River, Lackawaxen River, their tributaries, and all the flowing waters of Pike County are targeted.

Take a photo of the eligible fish against the Official Derby Ruler before releasing it unharmed to the water, then e-mail the image by July 6 to the Pike County Historical Society at pikemuse@ptd.net with the angler’s contact information, age, and a brief description.

The 24-inch coated paper rulers are available for free pick-up at regional sports shops, The Columns Museum at 608 Broad St. in Milford, PA; the Zane Grey Museum at 135 Scenic Dr. in Lackawaxen, PA; and the Upper Delaware Council (UDC) office at 211 Bridge St. in Narrowsburg, NY.

Prizes and certificates will be awarded in Youth (up to age 15) Male & Female, and Open Class (either gender, 16 years and up) categories
at the National Park Service (NPS) Upper Delaware and Scenic Recreational River’s 10th Annual Zane Grey Festival on July 12 in Lackawaxen.

All entrants have a chance to win a grand prize of an Old Town Canoes & Kayaks Saranac 146 canoe with two Carlisle Ausable paddles and two Extrasport Universal personal flotation devices donated by sponsor Johnson Outdoors Watercraft.

Prizes received to date include 36 lures and four caps donated by Peter Ridd of Thomas Lures in Hawley, PA; a fishing rod donated by Trout Unlimited Upper Delaware Chapter President Andy Boyar; the books “Zane Grey on Fishing”, “Adventures of a Deep Sea Angler”, “The Complete Book of Fly Fishing”, and “Complete Guide to Fishing: Fly Fishing” donated by NPS Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River; Pike County Historical Society (PCHS) free memberships and a package of two admissions to The Columns Museum with three publications, “The Lincoln Flag of the PCHS”, “The Civil War in Pike County”, and “The Mills of Milford” donated by The Columns Museum; and copies of “Centennial Edition: Riders of the Purple Sage” and free memberships donated by Zane Grey’s West Society.
