Beach Lake, PA – Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River invites the public to help save lives by showing their support for water safety on “Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day” on Friday, May 20, 2022. Since 1980, there have been 74 drownings on the Upper Delaware River, however no one has ever drowned wearing a properly fitted and fastened life jacket. No matter if you are an avid river user, a local business, or community organization, everyone can play a role and help spread the word that wearing a life jacket can save your life!

The United States Coast Guard statistics show that “drowning was the reported cause of death in four out of every five recreational boating fatalities in 2020, and that 86 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets”. When recreating on the Upper Delaware River it is imperative that individuals not only have, but also wear a properly fitting life jacket at all times whether swimming, boating, fishing, or floating.

This annual “Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day” event, hosted by the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) serves as a fun and educational way to kick off National Safe Boating Week, May 21-27, the official launch of the 2022 North American Safe Boating Campaign. Educating river users about the safety and importance of life jackets has been a main focus of both the North American Safe Boating Campaign and Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River.

The National Safe Boating Council and Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River are asking every participant to take a picture of themselves in their life jacket while at work and post it on social media along with the hashtag #lifejacket2work and tagging @boatingcampaign (Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram) and on Upper Delaware’s Facebook page @updeNPS and Instagram @upperdelawarenps. The Safe Boating Campaign will choose winners randomly throughout the day to receive boating swag such as t-shirts, dry bags, first aid kits, stickers, and more.

Remember, “Wear Your Life Jacket to Work” Day will take place on Friday, May 20th, wherever you are, remember your participation could save a life!
