Upper Delaware Scenic & Recreational River Thinks Outside the Box with the Junior Ranger Program
BEACH LAKE, Pennsylvania. – Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River celebrates National Park Week, specifically Junior Ranger Day on April 29, 2023, with the launch of a newly designed Junior Ranger interactive, fold-out pocket booklet and wooden Junior Ranger badge.
Visitors may pick up the fresh take on the Junior Ranger booklet while visiting Upper Delaware or by visiting the river’s webpage: Upper Delaware Junior Ranger.
The website includes a video demonstration of how to unfold the pocket-sized, adventure-ready 2.5-inch x 4 inch booklet. The Upper Delaware Junior Ranger Activity booklet creates a more personal and thoughtful experience through integrating what visitors are doing and thinking about while experiencing the river. The booklet is recommended for ages 5-12 but is fun for all ages.
Youth and youth-at-heart who complete the new booklet may receive a newly designed, wooden Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River Junior Ranger badge. The badge shows off a bald eagle illustration from the booklet.
This project is a collaboration between local youth and graphic artist Nathaniel Pereira-Mendoza, ENGN Civic Creative Center, and Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River. Over the course of a year, Nathaniel researched, drew, and designed the book with input from local youth of many ages. Upper Delaware staff provided guidance and content, and ENGN provided mentorship. Artist Pereira-Mendoza hopes, “…that those who use the booklet are able to learn and be educated from it and also have fun and enjoy doing so.”
This collaboration builds on a previous partnership between ENGN and Upper Delaware, working with local youth with graphic design skills to create new water safety posters for Upper Delaware’s Water Safety Campaign.
