Upper Delaware Council to Host National Park Service Water Safety Presentation on July 6
NARROWSBURG — The Upper Delaware Council (UDC) will hear an update on the National Park Service’s water safety initiatives for the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River on Thursday, July 6, at 7:00 p.m. at the UDC office located at 211 Bridge Street, Narrowsburg, NY, with a Zoom option available for remote participation.
NPS Upper Delaware Chief of Interpretation Ingrid Peterec and Law Enforcement Park Ranger Ron Babus will present statistical information on the 78 drownings that have occurred on the river since 1980, which in every case the victims were not wearing properly fitted life jackets.
They will discuss actions that the NPS Water Safety Committee and their partners have taken to understand and try to prevent these unnecessary fatalities.
The UDC business meeting that follows will include status reports from the Delaware River Basin Commission, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, National Park Service, and the UDC Executive Director; discussion of old and new business; and public comment.
