UDC’s July 2 Public Presentation on ‘Roebling, Before the Brooklyn Bridge’
NARROWSBURG – The Upper Delaware Council (UDC) will host a public presentation, “Roebling, Before the Brooklyn Bridge”, on Thursday, July 2, at 6:30 p.m., at the UDC’s Narrowsburg, NY office and by Zoom.
Professor, historian, and licensed architect Paul C. King’s research focus is on the early works of John A. Roebling in context of the development of 19th century suspension bridges in Britain, France, and America.
He is currently on sabbatical from the New York City College of Technology to complete his manuscript, “Roebling, Before the Brooklyn Bridge”, which looks at the evolution of Roebling’s innovations visible in his early work and embodied in the Brooklyn Bridge.
Keenly interested in the history of the Delaware & Hudson Canal, King serves as a historical consultant to the National Park Service (NPS), providing tours of the 1848 Roebling’s Delaware Aqueduct and returning each spring to introduce the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River’s summer staff to the history of its construction.
The Upper Delaware Council presented King with its 2024 Cultural Achievement Award in recognition of his status as the preeminent scholar on Roebling and the oldest surviving testament to the civil engineer’s wire suspension bridge design that now serves as a vehicle bridge connecting Lackawaxen, PA and Minisink Ford, NY and owned by the NPS.
The UDC’s monthly business meeting to follow will include reports from the Delaware River Basin Commission, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, National Park Service, and UDC Executive Director; discussion of old and new business; and public comments.
All UDC meetings held at 211 Bridge St. in Narrowsburg, NY are open to the public.
