UDC Announces Honorees for Awards Ceremony on April 25

NARROWSBURG – The Upper Delaware Council, Inc. (UDC) will honor individuals, organizations, and projects that have enhanced the quality of life or protected the resources of the Upper Delaware River Valley at its 22nd Annual Awards Ceremony on Sunday, April 25, in Eldred, NY. Reservations at $26 per person are due by April 15 for the banquet that will take place at The Eldred Preserve Outdoor Resort, 1040 Rt. 55. A cash bar reception begins at 3 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. buffet dinner featuring carved roast beef, turkey, and vegetable lasagna. New York State Assemblywoman Aileen M. Gunther (98th District), will deliver the keynote address prior to the presentation of awards.

The UDC will bestow awards in the following categories:

Distinguished Service Award – Alan Bowers and Charles Wieland, for their combined 25 years of service to the Upper Delaware Council representing Westfall Township, PA and the Town of Tusten, NY, respectively, and their long-term tenures as chairmen of the UDC’s Water Use/Resource Management Committee;

Robin M. Daniels Memorial Lifesaving Award – Town of Highland Constable Marc Anthony, for his August 19, 2009 off-duty river rescue to prevent a drowning near Barryville, NY;

Partnership Award – Multi-Municipal Gas Drilling Task Force,comprised of representatives from the six river valley Towns of Tusten, Cochecton, Delaware, Highland, Lumberland and Fremont, for their collaboration with the Sullivan County Division of Planning & Environmental Management on the September 2009 study, “Managing Natural Gas Development Impacts: Strategies to Protect Town Infrastructure and Land Use”;

Volunteer Award – Ed Jackson of Narrowsburg, NY, for his volunteer service to the Town of Tusten in the areas of planning, zoning, and community improvements;

Cultural Achievement Award – Carla Hauser Hahn of Callicoon, NY, for her project management of flood-damage repairs to the National Park Service Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River’s Roebling Bridge and Towpath Trail cultural resource properties;

Recreation Achievement Award – Cliff Robinson, Jr. of Westtown, NY, for his trail-blazing and canal towpath restoration efforts through the Delaware & Hudson Canal & Gravity Railroad Conservancy;

Community Service Award – Dorene Warner of Barryville, NY for her organization of river shoreline litter clean-ups and website initiatives for Upper Delaware organizations;

Special Recognition Awards (2) – Barb St. John White of the U.S. Geological Survey, Wellsboro, PA, for her Master’s Thesis study of fish host suitability for the endangered dwarf wedge mussels in the Upper Delaware River; and Bob Hare of Delray Beach, FL, for his extraordinary service as a seasonal river patrol volunteer for the NPS Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River;

Oaken Gavel Award – George J. Fluhr of Shohola Township, PA, for his leadership as Upper Delaware Council chairperson in 2009. All are welcome to attend the UDC’s Awards Ceremony. A downloadable reservation form is available at www.upperdelawarecouncil.org.
